This scene is inspired by Target Hill Pond just south of Hawick. This painting reminds me of one of those forbidden disused quarries that we all knew of when we were children. There was always a story of some naughty child who had gone for a swim and drowned after getting caught up in the wreckage of a sunken scrapped car. Anyway I love these Borders hawthorn hedges - shaped by the wind and clipped by hungry sheep.

Midlaw Linn is a small waterfall which lies at the top of the valley just west of Loch Skene. This is a romanticised image of Midlaw Linn not a photographically accurate one. I like the colours in the heather and the stones contrasted with the light reflected on the water.

This ruined castle was part of our view when we lived at Stobo in Peeblesshire. Tinnis Castle was built by the Tweedies of Drumelzier in the late 15th or early 16th century. Unfortunately the Tweedies had a long-standing feud with the Flemings of Flemington who blew Tinnis Castle to pieces with gunpowder. All that remains of it today are some foundations and a few large fragments of fallen masonry. Had this tragic event not occurred, I'm sure the view of Tinnis Castle from Alterstone on the Dreva road would have been included in every Scottish calendar since. My painting depicts what might have been, had it not been for the Flemings of Flemington.

In 2009 we spent six months in Australia. A friend allowed us to use his holiday apartment on Hyams Beach for a weekend. Apparently after many tests and comparisons the sand on Hyams Beach has been found to be the whitest in the world.

This view is from the Denholme road to Jedburgh near Bedrule. Fatlips is a 16th century tower house which sits on top of Minto Craigs not far from Hawick. It was built by the Turnbulls of Barnhill. This is how I imagine parts of Innerleithen may have looked in the past. The town has changed a great deal over the centuries. Between the present day High Street and the Vale of Leithen football pitch there used to stand a tower house, perhaps like one of the buildings in this painting.

When we lived in North Sumatra we used to go regularly to the Tuk-tuk peninsula on the Island of Samosir, Lake Toba for a short break. The lake is actually a massive volcanic crater filled with water, the largest in the world. The area is home to the Batak tribes. The bird in the painting is a Brahminy Kite.

The Pentlands are a string of hills running south-west from Edinburgh towards Carnwath. The middle section of this range lies within the boundaries of Peeblesshire. To the south-east of the hills is the vast Leadburn moor.

An imaginary scene. For most of my life here in Scotland I have lived in houses with spectacular views, something very important to me. What I especially like about a view that you see everyday is the way that it changes over the years, with the seasons, and even throughout the day depending on the light and the weather. Nothing transforms a view more pleasantly than a beautiful sunset.

By far the most dramatic waterfall in the Southern Uplands, the Grey Mare's Tail is on the road between St. Mary's Loch and Moffat. At the bottom of the falls are the remains of an Iron-age fort, at the top of the falls - Loch Skene. This is a place with a lot of atmosphere - very inspirational. In this picture I have tried to capture the mood of the place rather than a perfect reproduction of the scene.

This scene is typical of the Moorfoot Hills near Innerleithen. A grassy hill next to a heather-clad hill, interspersed with peat bogs and craigs. This hill country is home to some of the more remote Tower Houses, most of them in a state of ruin.

In my mid-twenties, every summer my friends and I would enjoy a camping holiday at Loch Arnish on Raasay. We found a west facing gulley in the trees at the top of a cliff overlooking the Isle of Skye. With a tarpaulin suspended in the trees to keep off the inevitable drizzle, a fire to deter the even more inevitable midges, and the un-clipped seats from my Citroen 2CV as a three piece suite, we would sit in comfort in our improvised outdoor living room - Very civilised! This painting is a view of Raasay from the Scottish mainland.

"Bield" is an old Scots word meaning "shelter". This weather ravaged house sits on a hill overlooking a valley and distant hills. Even a grey sky can provide a bit of atmosphere. This imaginary scene gave me the inspiration for my painting - "Pentland View".

I really don't want to part with this painting so I may just sell it in print form. It is definitely more of a sky-scape than a landscape. The dark shapes of the hills and the colours of the sky are subtly reflected on the surface of the loch. If I saw a sky like this one I don't know if I would stand and stare or if I would run for cover.

Edinburgh used to be known as "Auld Reekie" due to the amount of smoke (reek) in the atmosphere. In this painting I have put together some of Edinburgh's architectural features, not as they actually appear but to produce an interesting composition with depth. Although not an actual view, I think it is instantly recognisable as Edinburgh.

Buckholme Tower was built in 1582. It is situated just off the A7 near Galashiels. Unlike many of the other ruined Border towers Buckholme still has its "barmkin" (walled courtyard).

The upper reaches of the Ettrick Valley give us a view of what much of the area would have looked like hundreds of years ago, before the valleys were drained to provide more land for agriculture. In this painting you can see wooded marshland with a backdrop of hills.

There are few things I enjoy more than coming across an old ruin in a bleak landscape and trying to imagine the people who inhabited it in better days. What I imagine is probably far from the truth. Often a building in a state of ruin has more atmosphere than it would have had in its prime. The ruin in this painting does not exist. The scene is based on the landscape in the Loch Skene area. This painting is unusual in that it is much bigger than most of my work.

This is a highly romanticized portrayal of the tiny Gameshope Loch hidden away in the grassy, treeless wilderness between Loch Skene and Fruid. This is one of the most isolated places you can find in the Borders. A few years ago I camped on my own up there and woke in the night to see a misty moonlit scene. Maybe that's where this picture came from.

An imaginary location with an occupied Tower House. Fortified houses of this type, many ruins of which can still be found all over the Borders, were built for protection against marauding bands of Border Reivers. These bandits would raid their neighbours on both sides of the border, stealing livestock and anything else of value that could be carried away. Although most surviving tower houses are of bare stone only, originally they were rendered with lime, as depicted in this picture.

"Hass" is an old Scots word meaning neck, throat, a gap, or an opening. The gap or pass between two hills is sometimes called a "Hass". This little picture captures the atmosphere and colours of the Hass o' the Red Roads between Falcon Craig and Hartfell Craig.

I painted this picture on the Tuk-tuk peninsula of the island of Samosir in Lake Toba, North Sumatra. An unlikely location to paint a picture of Leith you may think. I started off trying to paint Lake Toba and its surrounding mountains which in fact make up the rim of a massive volcanic crater. Before long I realized that my hills looked more like the Pentlands so I started playing around with ideas of old Edinburgh buildings and light reflected on wet sands. Home is where the heart is...

The kind of day that I like best. I love walking in the hills on a day like this. You can see the showers coming in the distance, some of them pass by, others hit you, but you have plenty time to get your waterproofs on and find a sheltered spot. From an artist's or photographer's point of view a cloudy sky is much more atmospheric than a clear blue one.

A spectacular craggy hill near Hawick in the Borders. This painting is of the view from Bedrule. On the top of the hill are the remains of an Iron Age fort; the site was also used by the Romans, probably as a signal station. The covenanter Alexander Peden preached illegal sermons on Ruberslaw in the "killing times" of the late 1600s. A local poet named John Leyden wrote of Ruberslaw: "Dark Ruberslaw, that lifts his head sublime, Rugged and hoary with the wrecks of time ; On his broad misty front the giant wears, The horrid furrows of ten thousand years."

Take out an Ordnance Survay map of the Borders, find a hill sheep farm, follow the burn uphill from the farmyard and you will probably find a small cottage bearing the name of the farm followed by the old Scots word "hope" meaning a valley or hollow among the hills. These old shepherds' cottages are usually uninhabited and in a state of ruin. Some still have a roof and even items of decaying furniture inside. However, as soon as the roof collapses the rate of ruination accelerates dramatically and the cottage quickly resembles the one in this painting. If you ever wonder why so many of these habitations have been abandoned - just visit one in the middle of winter and all will become clear.

This is an experimental painting done by simply folding the paper to produce a mirror image. I like the striking contrasts in colour, the rich textures, and also the fact that it is not perfectly symmetrical.

In 2009 my wife and I spent six months in Australia. We stayed with friends in Tasmania for a couple of weeks. I camped with my friend Bill in the "Walls of Jerusalem" national park. This painting is based on the view from Mt Jerusalem. It highlights the colour and texture of the rocks and vegetation in the area.
